First Refurbished Qantas A380 Set To Fly

PUBLISHED 25 SEPTEMBER 2019

Qantas has 12 remaining A380s which they estimate they will keep flying until the late 2020s. In the meantime, Qantas has commenced a refurbishment program, paying particular attention to the premium cabins.

Business class on the upper deck of the Qantas A380 was configured  2-2-2 which frankly, isn’t up to scratch in 2019.

The refurbishment is due to be completed by the end of 2020. Passengers can expect a refresh of the 14 seat first class cabin, the installation of the same seats you seat on the 787-9 in premium economy, and upgraded cushions and IFE in economy.

The most noticeable makeover is in business class. The 70 seats will be the latest Qantas Business Suites (as seen on the Qantas 787-9s) in a 1-2-1 configuration. There will also be two lounge areas in the forward area of the upper deck which are reckoned to be an improvement on the previous A380 lounge design.

Qantas had announced they would be rolling out the refurbished A380s approximately once a month from September 2019.

Well, the first one is coming. There has been no fanfare, no announcements, but the first refurbished A380 had been slotted into the schedule and spotted.

The first refurbished A380 is VH-OQK. It has been refurbished in Dresden and was clocked on FlightRadar 24 departing on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

A check of the Qantas booking engine shows it is scheduled to operate QF2 from London Heathrow through to Sydney on September 30, 2019.

It looks like the aircraft will spend the first part of October 2019 shuttling between Australian and England before setting its sights on LA.

Executive Traveller has an initial operating schedule for VH-OQK:

30 September 2019QF2Heathrow-Singapore-Sydney
02 October 2019QF1Sydney-Singapore-Heathrow
03 October 2019QF2Heathrow-Singapore-Sydney
05 October 2019QF1Sydney-Singapore-Heathrow
06 October 2019QF2Heathrow-Singapore-Sydney
08 October 2019QF1Sydney-Singapore-Heathrow
09 October 2019QF2Heathrow-Singapore-Sydney
11 October 2019QF11Sydney-Los Angeles
11 October 2019QF12Los Angeles-Sydney

With quite a few years of flying left in the A380s, it’s good to see Qantas keeping them fresh and competitive.
