Hainan Airlines is cancelling services on its Melbourne – Xi-An route.
The airline, owned by HNA Group (which also owns 13% of Virgin Australia) has been flying an A330-200 twice weekly on the route since 2016.
The cancellation takes effect from October 27, 2019.
Hainan Airlines flights from Melbourne to Haikou and Qingdao are unaffected.
Hainan Airlines flys to several destinations in Australia. The airline is based in Shenzen. Its load factors on its Australian flights are mediocre. The latest BITRE results show Hainan only filled half its available seats from Australia in June 2019. Passenger numbers on Hainan Airlines fell 5.4% in June 2019.
