Air New Zealand Reboots Seoul Flights

After an absence of over 20 years, Air New Zealand rebooted its flights between Auckland and Seoul on the weekend.

The flights will run three times a week throughout the year, increasing to five flights a week during the peak southern summer period across December to February.

Air New Zealand’s management are hoping to increase tourism numbers in both directions. South Koreans are New Zealand’s third largest source of North Asian visitors (after Japan and China) and the airline want to build on this.

But the Kiwi’s haven’t been reciprocating. Air New Zealand acknowledges that South Korea isn’t on a lot of New Zealanders’ radars. But flights to Osaka and Kyoto, when they began, faced similar challenges, and those flights worked out. Air New Zealand is seeing these new direct flights as an opportunity to grow the market.

Presently, Korean Air flies between Seoul and Auckland. Air New Zealand has been funnelling its passengers onto connecting Asiana Airlines flights at Tokyo – a journey that can take up to 20 hours when transit times are included.

The new direct service, using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, will get passengers up to Seoul in 11 hours and back to Auckland in 12 hours. The Seoul bound flights leave at lunchtime and arrive in the early evening. The return flight to Auckland leaves mid evening and lands in the City of Sails lunchtime the following day.

Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners seats 302 passengers, including 18 passengers in business class, 21 passengers in premium economy, and 263 passengers in economy. Air New Zealand offers their economy skycouch product on their 787-9 services and will be rolling out economy stretch on the aircraft over the next 12 months.

Flights commenced on 23 November 2019. There are three permanent flights a week and two extra seasonal flights over the summer. Frankly, the schedule is a mess, with uneven arrival and departure times. The schedule over the 2019/20 southern summers is as follows:
