New El Al And Ethiopian Codeshare Joint Ventures To Australia Come Into Force

The past week has seen a couple of interesting codeshare arrangements come into force which will see two airlines without a physical presence in Australia have a virtual presence here at least. Both Ethiopian Airlines and El Al Israel Airlines flight tags are now appearing on flights in and out of Australian cities.

And none of the codeshare arrangements involve an Australian carrier.

El Al / Thai Airways Codeshare Into Australia

El Al Israel Airlines has stepped up its codeshare with Thai Airways into the Australian cities of Melbourne and Brisbane. El Al flies between Tel Aviv (TLV) and Bangkok (BKK) six days a week. From there you can hook up with Thai Airways and head down to Brisbane (BNE) on their four times a week service or their double daily services into Melbourne (MEL) – all on El Al ticket stock and flight numbers.

Australia has a large Jewish diaspora, particularly in Melbourne. El Al Israel Airlines have an office there but do not send their metal in Australia.

The El Al and Thai codeshare arrangement came into effect in late October 2019.

Ethiopian Airlines codeshares with SAA into Perth

East African airline powerhouse Ethiopian Airlines also doesn’t have a presence in Australia (perhaps a missed opportunity because Addis Ababa would make for an interesting stopover on the way to or from Europe). But they have just hooked up with South African Airlines to codeshare on the latter’s daily flights between Johannesburg (JMB) and Perth (PER).

Ethiopian Airlines’ passengers can hop on any ET flight to Johannesburg then catch the daily mid evening South African Airways flight across to Perth, arriving at lunchtime the following day. At Perth it is just a few minutes walk from the international terminal to the Virgin Australia terminal where you can catch flights elsewhere in Australia.

The Ethiopian and South African codeshare arrangement came into effect in late October 2019.
