China Eastern Airlines is set to trial a service between Perth and Shanghai early next year.

According to a Perth Airport media release, the airline will operate three flights a week between Perth and Shanghai’s Pudong Airport.

The flights will operate between January 15, 2020 and February 17, 2020

According to Perth Airport, flights will arrive mid morning into Perth on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays before heading back to Shanghai just prior to lunchtime on the same days. A check of the China Eastern website reveals the flights are not yet listed for sale. There’s zilch on Expedia or Webjet either.

Perth Airport says the flights will be operated by A330-200. Seat Guru reveals there are three versions of this type operated by China Eastern. Perth Airport says the aircraft will seat 232 passengers, matching the A330-200 (33H) layout. There are 30 seats in the business cabin in a 1-2-1 layout and 202 seats in economy in a 2-4-2 layout.

Executive Traveller did a recent review of a China Eastern A330 flight to Brisbane. Note that this flight was using a different version of the A330.

It’s noted that if this trial is successful, it could lead to year round China Eastern services to Perth. China Southern sends an A330 to Perth from Guangzhou but there are no direct services between Perth and Shanghai.

This trial appears to be underwritten by trade as much as passengers. Channel 7 News is reporting that 15,000kg of West Australian rock lobsters will be making their way to Shanghai on every flight over the trial period.

While Australia is growing in popularity with Chinese tourists, just 64,000 of them visited Western Australia in the 12 months ending March 31, 2019.
