Port Moresby might not be the first place you’d think of as a transit port but local airline Air Niugini is doing its best to persuade people that it makes sense.
Air Niugini been promoting Port Moresby’s Jackson Airport as a handy hub airport for people in that part of the world looking to fly to places like Nadi and Hong Kong.
Fly up from Cairns and effortlessly fly on to Hong Kong. At least that’s the sell.
Now Air Niugini is promoting another offbeat route; Manila to Nadi. Via Port Moresby of course.
How many people need to get from Manila to Nadi or vice versa, Oz Traveller does not profess to know but neither Fiji Airways or Philippine Airlines fly the route.
What’s the catch? Well, the Air Niugini flights only operate once once a week. The Manila – Port Moresby flights connect with the new weekly Port Moresby – Nadi non-stop 737 service. That gives you the option of either one night in Fiji while the plane lays over or eight nights in Fiji til next week’s return flight.
Depends on how much you like Fiji or what you want to do there I guess.
And Oz Traveller admires Air Niugini’s efforts to promote itself and the possibilities of flying some pretty obscure routes.
There’s a few hours stop over each way in Port Moresby. It’s not the greatest airport in the world (though arguably a far better place than Manila’s dreadful Ninoy Aquino Airport). The Air Niugini Lounge at Jackson Airport is open to Air Niugini business class passengers and Executive Club members travelling on Air Niugini flights that day.
All sectors on this route are operated by an Air Niugini Boeing 737.
