The first flight isn’t until 2020 but Virgin Australia has just started selling tickets on its direct Melbourne – Kununurra flights.
Tickets went on sale on August 1, 2019, and the first flight will be on May 15, 2020. The flights will run three times a week until August 2020, giving frostbitten Melbournians a fast escape route to warmer climes.
And tanned Kununurrans will have a fast route down to the coffee, restaurants, bars and shops of Melbourne.
The 202 winter Kununurra schedule is :
|Dep Melbourne (MEL)||VA2960||Tue, Thu, Sat||10.00|
|Arr Kununurra (KNX)||12.40|
|Dep Kununurra (KNX)||VA2961||Sun, Wed, Fri||10.00|
|Arr Melbourne (MEL)||16.40|
Economy fares are selling from AUD$399.00 and business class fares from AUD$1281.00
The flights are being operated by Alliance Airlines using one of their Fokker 70s and sold through Virgin Australia. The aircraft will offer 65 seats in economy class and 8 seats in business class.
Alliance has a fleet of 14 Fokker 70s.
The route does not appear to be a speccy deployment of a spare aircraft. The Melbourne – Kununurra flights have been sometime in the making and was driven by Kimberley tourism authorities. The viability of the route seems to be underwritten by APT pre-purchasing a large number of seats for their tour groups.
Seeing any new route open is welcome, particularly direct routes into north western Australia, an area that has always been a time consuming and expensive destination for Australians on the east coast to access.
